The road map that will change your life

My first experience with reading author John Maxwell’s book was when I participated in a virtual book club and we read “15 Invaluable Laws of Growth”. I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style and most importantly his core message around investing in personal growth and development, that flows through a lot of his books.

I love to cook for a myriad of reasons including spending time with my husband while he helps out with prep work and it gives me the time to decompress and focus on making something wonderful and nutritious for the family. I absolutely enjoy the process of cooking as much as the end product- a yummy, sumptuous meal and a very happy family! Before you say,” What does cooking have to do with this book review”, read on to see the connection!

The book does a great job at defining success as a journey, not a destination. So, success to me in cooking is not just a yummy meal at the end, but also enjoying the process of cooking every step of the way. The author talks about knowing your purpose, growing to your maximum potential, and sowing seeds that benefit others.

Here are a few takeaways after reading the book:

The Power of a dream

It all starts with a DREAM! Knowing where you want to go in your life and daring to dream is the foundation of achieving success. This might look different for each of us, and the main point here is to know that we have to whip up a dream based on our past, present and future ( past strengths, life experiences, present resources,  circumstances and future aspirations).

Attitude is key to success

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

I am a “glass-half-full” type of person and the above quote sums up my beliefs around attitude. I have realized that we can continue to build on our positive attitude by being cognizant of our daily actions. When I find myself judging others, I take the time to acknowledge my thoughts and then focus on my commitment to see the best in others and focus on solutions rather than reacting or blaming others.

Define your goals and move into ACTION

Once we spend the time to pen down our dreams, it’s time to create a recipe for our goals. All we have to do is to take the dream we have and break it down into smaller, more attainable goals. If running a marathon is your dream, then you have to chart out a plan and set some smaller goals and milestones along the way to mark your progress. In this case, running 5K might be your first milestone. As we all know, a goal without action is delusion. So, doing the work and being consistent is critical to gaining momentum with the dream.

Have a GROWTH plan

What do we mean by a growth plan? No, it’s not about the next promotion; it’s about doing the work to develop yourself in pursuit of your purpose. Identify a few things/skills you want to master and go to work with that! Want to learn a new language? – GO for it! Growth plan might look different for everyone. Ensure that you have time scheduled on your calendar every week to learn and develop. Take the time to attend a conference to develop a skill or read a book. Whatever you do, have a plan and pursue it with passion.

Make an IMPACT

Last but not the least, once you start learning, start thinking about how and where you can use the information and who else would benefit from you sharing that knowledge. Often times, we hesitate to share information or provide inspiring ideas as we don’t consider ourselves as the expert. You don’t have to be an expert before making an impact! Take the time to share what you have learnt and take others along with you in your success journey!

Remember, growth is your responsibility and success will follow once you do the work to know your purpose, grow to your maximum potential, and sow seeds that benefit others.
